Carburettor Carb Cleaning 101

Carb Cleaning 101
By M. Shively

The elements of internal combustion engines are: correct fuel/air ratio, spark at right time, adequate cylinder compression.

There are many passageways and openings to check and clean. All are important in function and when obstructed or not working properly, have subtle to radical effects on engine performance. Vacuum leaks and carburetor synchronization also effect performance and should be inspected and adjusted following the below procedures.

Vegan Vegetarian Restaurants in Perth Western Australia

August 18, 2009

Post by SOBL:

  • Sri Melaka, James St (near Rosie O’Gradys) – Malaysian style with faux meat dishes, and a buffet for $18 Fri/Sat nights – excellent, been here 100 times
  • Annalakshmi, Barrack St Jetty (near Lucky Shag) – Indian style, simple choice, pay what you think it’s worth. Awesome evening view over river
  • Loose Box in Mundaring does a veggie degustation menu for $150…
  • Takas, William St / Shafto Lane – extremely cheap and cheerful Japanese with 6 veggie choices
  • Anna’s in Leederville – Vietnamese – not bad selection, good prices
  • Chatters, Morley & Midland – modern asian – nice decor, reasonably priced, ALL of the chicken and fish dishes can be done with faux meat
  • Really, most asian / Indian restaurants have a decent choice (avoid the ones with ducks in the window)
  • Ha Lu in Leederville is slightly expensive, high quality Japanese with sufficient choice

Understanding Fork Springs by Larry

May 13, 2009

My brother’s VFR8 had appalling dive. It would dive so much it would bottom the fork very early and lock the front tyre. I don’t recall how much I reduced the air gap but it transformed the bike. From memory probably the worst dive I’ve experienced was on the FJ11 and 12.

Did you measure the air gap before emptying the oil out? Compare it to spec to ensure you have what you’re supposed to and then reduce it (put more oil in) by about 20-25% and try that.
Are you able to measure the current spring rate? Simplest way is to:

  1. stand the fork on a bathroom scale with a tape measure alongside.
  2. Zero the scale then push down and read off the scale as a mate reads off every 10mm of compression.
  3. Then graph it – and average the kg/mm if it’s a linear spring.

SDR-standard-fork-rate

If you can measure the height of the spring when the fork is extended (probably by adding and subtracting the fork cap height) then you can compress the spring fully and see how far you can go before it becomes coil-bound. If it’s more than the travel you have in the fork then you could cut a spacer (25mm conduit) to fill the difference but don’t go so far as to actually allow the spring to bind in use.

A Taste of WAR

January 31, 2009

There are few thigs to rival swooping along Del Park Road early on a cold morning, particulalry when the mist is across it, the sun shines intermittently through the trees, the air is cool, dense and bristling with extra horsepower, earplugs attenuate the sound of the bike and lock you further into the serenity of the insular micro-environment inside your
helmet thats warmed by your breath, as your glare penetrates through your dark visor to exit of the corner and a minute twist of your right wrist catapults you to the next one.

Its the ultimate in isolation, in being in charge of your immediate environment and your immediate destiny, yet its ultimately more enjoyable when surrounded by friends duplicating that experience for themselves.

Thats when you stop at the millhouse to share the individual nuances of your experience with everyone else and as you finish your last fork full of warmed chocolate cake, you realise that everything is right with the world.

PB – not missing the bike or Dwellingup runs at all.

How to check motorcycle drive chain stretch

April 11, 2008

How to check motorcycle drive chain stretch, with video demonstration.

  1. At the middle/end of the rear sprocket grab a chain link.
  2. Try to pull the chain off of the sprocket to the rear of the bike.
  3. Any slack movement distance of the chain link up the sprocket tooth is the stretch of the chain.
New chain and sprockets should have negligible slack at this point.
Old chain will move up the sprocket tooth.
Drive problems can occur when the chain rollers can slip up off of the sprocket teeth, skipping sprocket teeth instead of turning the wheel.

Introduction to Carburettor Tuning

April 11, 2008

Three adjustments in fuel metering, pilot jet and screw, needle, and main jet. All three have an effect at all engine speeds/throttle settings. Adjustments to the pilot jet and screw have the most effect at low throttle settings. Needle adjustments have the most effect at mid throttle settings. Main jet adjustments have the most affect at high throttle settings. however, the main jet does affect part-throttle operation, but not much. The pilot jet and screw do affect operation at high throttle, but not much.

A brief history of WAR + Rules of WAR

>Can somebody tell me the date that WAR _originally_ came to exist?

Actually that would be good to know, we could then have on the website “W@R
estb. 1994” etc….. It would be good to get the history of our founding
fathers straight as I can see the W@R “group” continuing and developing for
some time.

I don’t actually know myself, I signed up around mid ’97 and I cant even
remember how I found out about it. Like Brad said it was very established
even then, on this very “war@guild.uwa.edu.au” address with 60 or so list
members. There was a website with a few ride photo’s and Tshirts had already
been done (graphic on the back was “Their Toys (a tricycle), Our Toys
(Ducati 888)”. Rides were on the on the last Sunday of the month from
McDonalds Midland, always some variation of York, Northam, Toodyay and
Bindoon runs. Viel spass πŸ™‚
